Student Government Recap / January 20th 2012

Wassup Ya’ll! This is your weekly Student Government Recap!

Ok. SO! To start off the always lovely Garrett came in to talk with us about 24 hour access during review week. We have it set up that 24 hour access will begin April 15th through May 1st. Also, good news for the people who don’t like waiting on the shuttle bus! There will be one new 14 passenger shuttle bus (coming soon!) that will run during the day until 7:15. The van will still be utilized but only after 11 when the pick up spot is at the ACB. A few more things that were mentioned was the Executive Board (and anyone else who wants to come) will be attending the Leadership Conference at Grand Valley on Feb. 18th. If you’re interested let one of the Executive Members know and we’ll get it handled for you.

Reminders! Everyone should be prepared to attend Department Meetings the week of February 6th.

That’s all folks*

Student Government Recap. Wednesday January 11th 2012

Hey Guys!

First meeting of the year went pretty well! I’ll keep this recap short and sweet so we can all get back to enjoying this AMAZING winter weather. (Seriously! What is going on in MI!? Can’t complain!) A few topics that were discussed were outside Committees, Department Meetings, and what can we do for the STUDENTS!

Starting off, all of the Representatives should resume their roles and positions on outside committees! It’s very important that we integrate that outside information in to our meetings. Also, all departments should hold their department meetings the week of February 6th! We also cut down the times our Departments should meet from twice a semester to just once.

Also! Let’s figure out what the students of CCS want. What free stuff do they want? Any shindigs they want? We can work to make this school a bit more social. We deserve a little fun every now and again. LET US KNOW!

*LAST THING! If you’re on the 8th floor (tc) make sure you take the locker survey that’s hanging up in the elevator area. You can’t miss it. It’s a brown paper bag. :)

Student Government Recap. Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011.

Hey Guys!

Student Government had perhaps the greatest meeting of all time today, made possible in part with Fine Arts representative Michaela Mosher’s contribution of wonderful shwarma to the meeting. Besides said deliciousness, we covered some pretty sweet stuff.

It was that time of year for student government representatives to break off into committees, this year we are focusing our efforts on Century Ball, ID policies, Informational Posters and Interdepartmental Projects and Events. One of the committees that we’re taking special note of is the ID policy. I know that 99% of all students don’t actually wear their ID’s in plain sight like we’re supposed to. A lot of times it’s in our wallet or backpack or even in our car… but it is CCS policy for us to have it in plain sight. In an effort to increase the safety of our school, Student Government presented a plan to encourage students to wear their ID’s. Just how the Taubman building requires students to flash their ID’s, the WB Ford would as well. This would alleviate security insurections to a building thats fully equipped with millions of dollars of technology.

There will be plenty of more information to come in the next few weeks about the ID policies, so definitely keep your eye open!

SUBMIT A T-SHIRT DESIGN! Heed the posters, it’s a super cool idea!

Mara Magyarosi, Art Ed/Photo, came to Student Government requesting volunteers for the One Million Bones Project next week. For those who don’t know, One Million Bones is an installation project aimed at raising funds and awareness of genocide prevention, most notably in South Sudan. CCS was the largest participating group earlier this year with our freshman class all contributing, but now we aim to go even further by having the students of the Henry Ford Academy School for Creative Studies participate as well. As a volunteer you’d help students create small clay bones which would be displayed in the national mall. The dates are wednesday/thursday/friday, and this is definitely something I implore everyone to take note of.

One last thing! The week of the sixteenth we will be having another round of student only departmental meetings! Don’t forget!!!!! Check your calendars!!!

Student Assembly Meeting Recap, 10/5/11

Hey guys!

So as you all know, Wednesday the 5th was the first Student Assembly Meeting of the semester. Of those who attended were Richard L. Rogers, President of the school, Imre Molnar, Dean of Academic Affairs, Julie Hingelberg, Dean of Enrollment and Student Affairs, and Anne Beck, VP of Administration & Finance.

It was a great meeting, and we were able to discuss a multitude of topics.

The first of which was Security Concerns. Many students have expressed concern as to security protocol at the Ford Campus. They have said that they would feel more secure and safe if security was a bit tighter and guest passes were issued for non students. One idea brought up as to remedy the situation would be for students to flash their ID cards similar to how they do it in the Taubman. Security, as well as the Administration informed us that because we are a semi-open campus to the public… the public is allowed on the Ford Campus, and the logistics of checking IDs of everything would prove difficult given the myriad of access points.

On the subject of public access to the college, students were also concerned as to the fact that the Cafeteria was open to the public. We were told however that the cafeteria is not -generally- open to the public. Guests check in and CCS knows where they are coming from, and generally they are people who have worked on the Taubman. The Architects and Project Managers of the Argonaut building are usually the only people who utilize the cafeteria from the outside public, since their offices are in Midtown.

In terms of 24 hour facilities, due to the change in Foundations in which Digital Fundamentals Courses, there has been an increase in student activity at the 24 hour labs. Because of this, students are finding it increasingly difficult to utilize computers during class hours and nighttime hours. So, if you go to the lab and it is full, my suggestion is utilize the Student Success Center or Library for computer usage. Administration is discussing the feasability of an overflow lab, and hopefully we’ll be able to be equipped with enough space to accomadate for 24 hour usage.

Student Government Meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 28th

Hello Everyone!

It’s Jack, your new Vice President, here with an update on what we covered in this week’s meeting.

We started out with a visit from Steve Featherstone, the General Manager of Sodexo, our food service provider on campus. He came in to discuss changes that have been made this Fall as well as collect feedback and ideas to improve food service at CCS. One big thing you may have noticed this year is the inclusion of students to the food service staff. The Tim Hortons located on the first floor of the Taubman Center has also extended its hours of operation to 5pm on weekdays. Oh and I forgot to mention, Sodexo also provided us with a great assortment of sandwiches and wraps for our meeting!

Student Government will be checking in with Steve at the last meeting of every month. If you have any questions or feedback about food service on campus please get in contact with him: steven.featherstone@sodexo.com

Next we talked with our Fine Art reps about their involvement in selecting a new chair for their department. It sounds like student input will play a large role in the process. More updates to come as the year progresses.

Last week Student Government didn’t meet in order to give time for departmental meetings. This week we discussed some of the main concernes voiced among the departments. One thing discussed was 24 hour access. If you have had troubles getting access and you are a senior ment to be on an access list, or if a room is not being left open that should be, talk to your department administrator and get them to add you or the room to the list. We are also looking into the possibility of making some of the end of the semester class/teacher review information available for students to see. This could potentially be a way for students to put together a better idea of a what the class covers that they are registering for.

If you have any concernes about your department or the school make sure you talk with you department representative this week and/or come the the Student Assembly this coming Wednesday, Oct. 5th. Members of the administration as well as faculty will be there to answer questions as well as gather feedback. The meeting will take place from 11:30-12:30 in WB217 (the classroom at the very end of the foundations hall).

We also set a date for our participation with the Greening of Detroit organization. CCS will be taking a group to the November 5th tree planting from 9am-1pm. Student Life will provide lunch afterwards for those who participate. If you are interested in planting trees with us contact me at jdouglas@collegeforcreativestudies.edu and for more info check out www.greeningofdetroit.com

With all that said, I hope the first four weeks of class have treated everyone well. We hope to see you at the Student Assembly this Wednesday!

Thats 11 sweet pieces of swag for you to rock. Details of the contest will be brought up during the meeting, so if you want to submit your design to your department, please attend! (also for the free food)

Nadine Ashton stopped in to talk to us about Academic Advising and Summer courses at CCS, we discussed suggestions that we had heard about the timing of summer classes. School has finally started!

Our first meeting of the year was productive right off the bat. We had pizza from Jets and some bottled water. The t-shirts that Sebastian Gomez de la Torre (http://www.facebook.com/SebastianGdelaT) designed for Student Government were handed out, and we even took a group photo! It took us a few tries, but I think we ended up with a good one.

Just kidding! Here’s the good one ;)

One of the most important things we accomplished was electing in a new Vice President. Mara Magyarosi, who was voted in last Spring, has resigned for bigger and better ventures. She is a double major in Photo and Art Ed, and landed a great opportunity to be a Teacher’s Assistant. We’ll miss her! Several people ran, including Rico Jackson (A prospective student who is overflowing with ambition). Needless to say, he couldn’t stay after we figured out he wasn’t actually a student yet. A security issue we will surely be following up with.

But I digress. Our new VP is the wonderful Jack Douglas! He represents the Advertising Dept. with me, and no this wasn’t planned - he’s just a great guy!

Beyond that, our meetings will be held in W217 until further notice. We have the room reserved for the year, but it might be cool to mix it up a bit. For next semester, we plan on having our meetings at the Taubman Campus.

We’ve decided to have Department Meetings the week of September 19th. This will be the first one of the semester. The second will be after midterms.

The Proposal example video is in the planning stages, with some pretty great minds working on it. More on that soon.

Last but not least - this is very exciting - We’ve been talking about a T-Shirt Design contest with us and the Bookstore. This is in the planning stages as well!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful first week!

Executive Student Government Meeting, May 23rd 2011

Howdy ya’ll! So last week Student Government had an executive meeting to discuss some ideas and issues for the summer. Our goal was the get a head start on making sure your voices and concerns would be readily heard and handled before the school year started. Besides being a super cool meeting filled with the coolest people, we narrowed down our ideas into three categories. Reviews, the Cafeteria, and Security/24 Hour Access

REVIEWS

The first of which was brought up at a perfect time to get things handled before next year. One of the concerns brought up was the fact that the Entertainment Arts Department did not conduct Freshman reviews this year. Instead, Freshman were required to attend the 9am-9pm Senior Exit Review for their department. While Student Government felt that it was beneficial for all people within that department to attend, and see how the exit reviews are done, we also feel as though it was an absolute necessity for the EA freshman to have a review.

Despite the fact that they may not have work solid enough to show in the limited amount of space Entertainment Arts has to exhibit, and also would be showing predominately foundational work, it is still an important step in their CCS career. The initial student review prepares you for your subsequent reviews, and going on into a sophomore review with no idea of how it is conducted is just a bad idea, and in fact, we feel would put them behind other departments who get them started immediately. The Executives will be contacting the EA student government representatives, David Firth, and Juliet McCurry, and asking them to find out how the majority of the EA student body feels about the decision, and whether or not they would like to overturn that policy.

Also, on the subject of reviews, all department representatives will be having meetings to discuss reviews one on one with their department administrators and chairs. There are times when the outcomes and expectations of reviews are never discussed with Freshman students. So to avoid this confusion, we will instead try and get the information out ourselves, as students to students.

THE CAFETERIA

The second issue we discussed was the Cafeteria. Now I know that this has always been a hot button issue for our student body, as the Cafeteria has only been in its second year of operation, and things will be needed to be ironed out for quite some time. Natasha Guimond, President of the Student Government, has personally taken to trying to solve the issues within the cafeteria, so if you have a question or concern, please email her.

One of the ideas we threw around was the concept of using your flex dollars for vending machines. Now a days, the technology to use a credit card or student ID for a vending machine is readily available, and having that at a cafeteria with exceptionally limited hours would give students options to eat using the money on their cards.

Another idea has been one thats been passed around for two years now. Expanded hours. Student Governments Executives are unanimous in our opinion that the cafeteria should be open longer than the current hours. More could be said about this issue, but there should be no case made about it. Many schools have 24 hour dining options, and with the traffic the Cafeteria receives, it should offer food to students regardless of the time. Students paid for it, and sometimes we have to work late on projects that require us to stay up after 11.

SECURITY/24 HOUR ACCESS

The final issue is a difficult one. However, Security has always been a strong point in the appeal to CCS. We are an exceptionally safe school within an area that many attest to the instability of. The security team is what keeps us safe, and I applaud the job that they have done. However, like many issues within our school, a problem most students feel with security is within the area of communication.

One thing we feel would better the students would be a posted schedule of 24 hour openings and closings with specific dates during the times of midterms and reviews. It is rare that 24 hour access is notified to students. Sometimes it is done through department administrators, sometimes through signs, and most of the time we are notified after it started…. or not at all.

On the subject of 24 hour access, we also feel as though it would be in CCS’ best interest of 24 hour access was during the last three weeks of the winter semester. Rather than having 24 hour access during finals week and then review week, we feel that students would benefit from having 24 hour access during the week BEFORE as well.

Also, people stealing mice or keyboards from the TC lab.

A. STOP DOING IT.

B. Those things need to be locked up just like in any other computer lab.

C. Security, use your SECURITY CAMERAS to reprimand those people who steal them.

I for one do not appreciate it when I sit down in the basically brand new computer lab and find no mouse, and my keyboard is so encrusted with syrup from soda or crappy food that I can’t use the Tab, Q, W, E, A, S or D buttons. There is an absolutely no food or drink policy in every lab. If you’re hungry, go to one of the numerous tables or lounges in the TC, Kresge, or Walter B buildings. Once you’re done, compute to your hearts content.

Another idea student government brought up is the idea of security cameras. While we know it would be expensive to install cameras in all the classrooms of the Kresge, Walter B, and TC buildings… we feel as though it would be beneficial to an extreme degree. Firstly, it would reduce security concerns for students using labs after hours. Secondly, there should be no opposition to it, as there is nothing students should be doing in cameras that shouldn’t be views by a security camera.

Lastly, we felt as though the administrators of Security are here during normal business hours, around 7-4. Students are here from 8-10. It would be in the students best interest if the three security administrators had staggered shifts. If a security administrator was here at all times during building hours, issues of security would be able to be solved after 4pm.

~Just some ideas for you kids! If you have any questions, would like to add some stuff, or would just like to chat about cool things… please contact us at ccsstudentgovt@gmail.com

CCS has switched e-mail servers.

If you would like to continue, or start, forwarding e-mails to the account that you check regularly, follow these steps:

  • Click on the “Preferences” tab along the top of the page, after you’ve logged in with your Blackboard username and password (just like before).
  • Now, in the left column, click on “Mail”
  • Scroll down to a block labeled “Receiving Messages”. In this block, you will see, “When a message arrives:” Look for the words, “Forward a copy to:” and put the e-mail that you check regularly into the space.
  • To save, there is a “Save” and “Cancel” button towards the top left of the page, underneath the “Preferences” tab. Click on the “Save” button and your changes will be saved and the page will refresh back to your inbox.

Forwarding your school e-mail to your regular account is a really great idea, because then you won’t miss out on important department e-mails.

ALSO, A really important note. I realized that this system does not log you out automatically when you leave the web page or click out of the window. You either have to end the session for the web browser by quitting the program completely, or by clicking the “Log Out” button in the top right corner. This is really important to remember, especially if you’re checking on a school or other public computer.
